LBC is hosting a Holiday Makers Market on Sunday, December 6th, 1-4p. This socially-distanced, outdoor event will feature 16 local artisans and is open to the community. Come out and do some holiday shopping and support small businesses! A pop-up Java Joy truck will also be in attendance from 1-2:30p, with coffee & hot chocolate.

The nine sparkling new tennis benches and the volunteers who assembled them were highlighted in a recent newsletter. Also mentioned was the one vintage bench which Bob Flor beautifully refinished to match the color of the new ones.

What is the history of the unique solid wood memorial bench located on Court 5 and pictured below?

John and Shirley Williams moved to the Leslie Beach Club neighborhood in 1969 and immediately became members. "John was passionate about playing tennis," states Shirley as a primary reason for joining. He liked playing singles, later moving more to doubles and ALTA league play. A 1978 City Champions sign is displayed on Court 5 celebrating the team on which John was a member.

John became a shining example that tennis can be a lifetime sport, playing well into his 70's before having to stop for medical reasons. Even then, he continued to enjoy watching his friends play.

When John died (9/23/1931 - 8/22/2009), Shirley wanted to make a gift to the club as a tribute to him. After conferring with his many tennis buds, particularly the senior men who traditionally played on Court 5 every Saturday and Sunday morning during the 1990's and early 2000's, she ultimately decided on a memorial bench. Nick Grossman found the perfect one and added an inscribed brass plaque.

Shirley had tried to persuade John to attend church with her on Sunday mornings, but he usually ended up meditating with his congregation of senior tennis friends on Court 5. When his memorial bench was placed on the court, those friends gathered to celebrate his life, swap stories, pray, and scatter some of John's ashes. Fittingly the bench now continues to serve as a pew in John's Church of Court 5 for all LBC tennis players to enjoy.

A big thank you to Tom Doolittle, Bob Flor, Gil Davis, Seiji Takeuchi and Kai Takeuchi for assembling the new tennis benches!  Bob Flor is working to refinish the memorial bench on Court 5 - Thanks again, Bob!

If you did not get a chance to snack at the concession stand this weekend, have no fear! We are up and running and ready to serve you! With a wide variety of offerings, there's something for everyone (Gushers, Ring Pops, Fruit by the Foot and Itti Bitz have just been added to the offering!). Bring a few dollars to your swim time, or have your phone handy for venmo, as you enjoy a treat and support our kids!

Hours will be the same as the pool hours, so don't worry about not being able to get a refreshing drink or tasty snack while you're lounging poolside.

It is true that many hands make light work. We have an army of volunteers to thank for their help over this past weekend. At varying times we had the assistance of Todd and Abby Mowinski, Todd Stuckey, Ryan Tingle, Steve and Chip Seidenberg, Rachel Blanchard, Chase Ferguson, Randy Randolph, Tom Doolittle, Anne Holland, Brent Holland, Bob Flor, Melanie Clark, Kathy Malloy, Eric, Ellen, and Ariel Schwartz, Jason Smith, Patti Johnson, Margaret Evans, Norma Jaramillo, Jennifer Takeuchi, Don Higginbotham, Wes and LeighAnn Swift, Scott Boehringer, Maria Jefferds and Troy Brown, Amy and John McMillen, Sharon and Steve Robinson and their kids, Nancy Talero, Andrew Carlton, Pam and Alexander Mason, Ashley Kirk, Steve and George Zeliff, Ginger Vento, David Gushee, John and Cooper Ruckart, Mara Maddox, Carey Anderson and her sons, Brad Kesel, Andy Dickerson, and Tom and Gabriela Probst! Whew! Please forgive us if we have left anyone off this list. We accomplished a multitude of tasks, including but not limited to, pressure washing the pool decks, pressure washing the picnic tables, sweeping up trash, pruning the rose bushes, fixing the fans, clearing out construction trash and debris, painting the back deck, installing new toilet seats, installing new umbrella covers, positioning the planters, painting the picnic tables, painting the lifeguard stands, pressure washing the playground, and repairing the playground gate. Anne Sturtevant has graciously agreed to replant the planters as necessary, so look for those to be refreshed in the coming days. All these people really proved that we are a strong community, even in the face of unusual circumstances.

In order to complement our beautiful new facility, we have some projects that require volunteer assistance from club members. This is your chance to help the small group of volunteers who have worked on this project since the beginning.

Pool Deck: Pressure wash, prime, and paint the brown deck.

Playground: Pressure wash equipment and modular flooring

The Kirk brothers' food drive was a great success!  LBC raised $1640 which is equivalent to 6,560 meals. In addition the boys collected two full barrels of food donations that were dropped off to Atlanta Community Food Bank!  Many thanks to the LBC Community for supporting their efforts!

We would like to represent BSA Troop 15 in hosting a food and fund drive for the Leslie Beach Club and surrounding community. As you all know, the Coronavirus has had a huge impact on our community and Atlanta as a whole. The financial and health impact has left many in need of food, and the local Atlanta Community Food Bank is in great need of donations. As Scouts we would like to do our part in raising money and donations to help in time of great need.

How can you help?
1. Donate on line to this site.  All funds donated online go straight to the food bank.
2. Drop off donations at Leslie Beach.  We will be accepting monetary and food/paper good on the following dates:
   -Friday April 24, 5-7 pm
   -Saturday April 25, 12-2 pm

The following items are shelf stable and needed at the Food Bank:
-Canned fruit and vegetables, canned dried beans, lentils, shelf stable milk
-Canned tuna, chicken or salmon (in water), whole grain pasta or flour, olive or canola oil
-Brown rice, quinoa, natural peanut butter, diapers/toiletries
-Paper products

Please note that we will be maintaining social distancing with a table set up.  All donations can be dropped into well labeled bins. Every little bit of money can help, as just $1 can be turned into 4 meals.  We've seen our community come through in the past and we know it can make a great impact.
